The word ' Annapurna' is composed of two words 'anna' and 'purna', meaning "filled with food". It has also got its naming roots with goddess 'Durga', the Hindu Divine Mother, aboard of Lord Shiva, etc. Strictly closed till 1948, Annapurna region-8,091m., was opened for the foreign nationals in 1994 firstly to a group of American ornithologists followed by a team of Swiss climbers under the leadership of Rene Dittert. The team explored the stunning himalayas of the northeast of this country. The permission was granted by the then Nepalese government 1949 to the French Federation de la Montagne to climb one of the highest peaks that stood within Nepal.

The naturally blessed, Annapurna receives about 4800 tourists annually. However, due to excessive pressure of tourists and the migrants, the region has been facing a serious threat of loosing its diverse biodiversity, natural beauty and its rich culture. Hence, while on trekking or expedition, every guest is requested to maintain a minimum impact on the destination so that the carrying capacity would be preserved which would help to promote sustainable tourism in Nepal.
