Mt. Baruntse Expedition

Baruntse peak (7,129m) is one of the beautiful snow-capped peaks of Nepal above 7,000m. The peak lies in the heart of the Khumbu massif to the west of Makalu Mountain. It is also one of the few peaks of this height in the world with a high rate of success of ascent. We approach the mountain following the Mera peak trek till Mera La and then to Baruntse base camp. (5,250 m).This captivating ridge is surrounded by some of the most famous peaks of the world: Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, etc. Edmund Hillary and Jim McFarlane were the first to summit the peak for the first time. The route of this expedition goes through the southern ridge overhanging the famous West pass which was used by Hillary and Shipton in 1952. Our start begins from Lukla and slowly go across the Hongu valley, one of the most fertile regions in Nepal, passing northward through a beautiful alpine environment and delightful Sherpa countryside and its rich culture. The Baruntse base camp is situated at an altitude of around 5400m near the pristine lakes below Amphu Labtsa pass. The first camp will be set up just below East Col. at an altitude of 5,700m and the second camp will be constructed on the South – East Ridge at an altitude of 6,420m. East Col. will be crossed from first camp and descend down through steep slopes. Again, we traverse a large snow plateau and move towards the bottom of the South – East Ridge. From camp II, we climb steep snow slopes (about 45 degrees) and pass a several series of short steep steps of ice and reach the west side of the ridge. Finally, we reach the summit at the height of 7,129m.
