Phortse (3,950m) is a unique Sherpa settlement of about 80 households situated at the buffer zone of Sagarmatha National Park. The village has been developed as a model ecotourism village with the aim of adding cultural aspect to the Everest experience. Situated in the lap of the mountains, Phortse offers wonderful mountain views and wildlife experience. The village is lush, surrounded by birch and juniper trees that shelter endangered musk deer and different varieties of pheasants. Peacocks, Himalayan Tahr and bear are also spotted around the region every now and then. The very rare snow leopard found in the mountain region has also been reported to be seen here. It is about 4-hour walk north-east from Sagarmatha National Park. One can enjoy community-run home-stays at Phortse which add new experience of the mountain life to every visitor. The village also holds tea-shops and lodges as other alternatives of accommodation for the tourists. Staying at the home-stays as house guests, trying out wholesome Sherpa and Nepali food, and observing the local peoples' everyday life may provide unique experience to the visitors which would cherish throughout the rest of life. The villagers perform cultural programs in the evening to amuse the guests. There are three options of trekking for the trekkers. One has the option of coming back from Base camp to Namche via Phortse or returning to Namche after spending a night at Phortse or continuing on the Base Camp Trail via Pangboche and Kala Pattar.
Itinerary :
Day 01:
Kathmandu (1,300m)
Arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu. Upon arrival, we will be transferred to hotel. Remaining time, rest at your own.
Day 02:
Kathmandu – Nagarkot (2,099m)
Full day sightseeing in Kathmandu valley. In the late afternoon, we would go to Nagarkot via. Bhaktapur. We would be privileged to view beautiful sunrise and sunset from Nagarkot. Overnight in a resort.
Day 03:
Nagarkot – Kathmandu – Lukla (2840m) – Phakding (2800m)
We drive to TIA in the morning from Nagarkot after sunrise view. We will take our flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. Upon arrival at Lukla, we go for lunch in a hotel. Having lunch at Lukla, we start our trekking. On the way, we would see beautiful settlements of Sherpa community. Overnight at Phakding.
Day 04:
Phakding-Namche (3,440m)
Early in the morning we would be served bed tea in the teahouse. Having breakfast, we go around the village for short sightseeing. Having lunch at Phakding, we start our trek to Namche. The trail is normal up to Larja Dhovan. From here, we need to walk steep up till we reach Namche. Overnight at Namche.
Day 05:
Namche
We take rest at Namche for acclimatization. Before lunch, we go around the valley to be acclimatized with the local climate. We come for lunch in the afternoon. After having food, we just communicate with the local people to know about their culture and tradition. We tour around Namche Bazaar, view Mount Everest and other mountains from the view point if the weather is clear. We would also go for sightseeing and watch varieties of wildlife. We would also visit local monasteries and observe the traditional lifestyle of the local Sherpa community. We trek up to Khumjung (3,715m) and return to Namche in the evening.
Day 06:
Namche – Phortse (3,950m)
Having lunch at Namche, we commence our trek. Along the trail, we would view mountains and rivers. We experience wildlife and bird watching. We will experience how the local people have maintained ecotourism in the region.
Day 07:
Phortse
It is our turn to go around the village where the local people have preserved their rich culture and maintained ecotourism. We visit local monasteries, visit local power house, we go for nature walk and even trek to Luri Peak. We would be shown cultural show by the local people in the evening.
Now the day has come for us to make our selection on the trekking either to return or continue. One has the option of coming back from Base camp to Namche via Phortse or returning to Namche after spending a night at Phortse or continuing on the Base Camp Trail via Pangboche and Kala Pattar.
Day 08:
Phortse – Namche
We return the same way to Namche from Phortse. Overnight at Namche.
Day 09:
Namche – Lukla
Having lunch at Namche, we trek to Lukla. Overnight in a hotel.
Day 10:
Lukla – Kathmandu
We take our early flight from Lukla to Kathmandu. Upon arrival, we would be received by our representatives and transfer to hotel. After lunch, we go for shopping and in the evening, we would be served farewell dinner.
