When we talk of Nepal, she is not only a trekker’s paradise, but also a suitable haven for those who love bird watching. Having blessed with a vast array of exceptionally rich bird life, Nepal is reported to be home to more than 848 various species birds. With varied topographical and climatic conditions, the country is very rich in biodiversity. Nepal’s topography is diverse that it has lowland dense tropical forests to highland rhododendron and oak forests. An estimated 8% of the world’s birds are found in Nepal. Among them, 500 species of birds can be seen in and around the Kathmandu Valley alone. Phulchoki, Godavari, Nagarjun, Shivapuri, Sundarijal, Gokarna Wildlife Reserve, the Bagmati River and Taudaha are some of the major places for bird watching in Kathmandu.

Situated in the far west of Nepal, Bardia is another popular destination for bird watching. The Bardia National Park is full of tropical forests with Sal trees, riverine forests and grasslands. One can have a plenty of opportunities to watch birds by riding a boat on the slow moving Karnali River. A variety of birds, including ruddy shelduck, darters, brahmini kites, brown headed gulls, cormorants, oriental pied hornbills, night heron and purple heron, cinnaon bitterns, orioles and majestic peacocks can be seen. To have a rewarding experience, you can use your binoculars.

As mentioned above, the Kathmandu Valley is also a good place for bird watching. With over 500 species of birds, the capital valley’s surrounding hills offer a varied ecology ranging from primary and secondary forests to rhododendron, oak and pine forests. Moreover, the wetlands and open fields inside the valley make up a diverse habitat for many species of birds.

Some 265 species of birds are recorded in the scenic Phulchoki hill alone. Lying at an elevation of about 2,800 metres above sea level, this is the highest peak on the Valley rim. Situated just 20 kilometres southeast of Kathmandu, the hill is home to a number of species of birds such as Babblers & relatives, Warblers, Tits & nuthatches, Thrushes, Wood shrikes & minivets, Woodpeckers, Eagles and many migrant birds. Godavari is the foot of Phulchoki hill, where the Botanical Garden is situated. The Garden alone has over 100 species of birds including the lesser racket-tailed drongo, Tibetan siskin and the spotted fork tail.
